Where have we been?

Despite our best efforts, we’ve once again fallen into a pattern of not writing any new posts. This is due both to the fact that we’ve been spending all our times on boats—hence, no internet—and a more fundamental shift in our lifestyle. When we first set off some eighteen months ago, it was for the trip of a lifetime. And while this has turned out to be just that and more, after so long on the road, we’ve stopped looking at this as a mere trip, and more our new life.

More Bali Highlights

Things have been moving so quickly for us since we got back in Bali that we haven’t had a lot of time to post all that we’ve been doing. Rather than try and catch up with a bunch of posts, we’re just going to list the highlights from the past 10 days or so.

Decision Time

We’re in Ubud right now. Things have been busy the past two weeks – in a good way – and we both felt the need to get away to somewhere quiet and spend a few days regrouping. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been traveling for over 70 days. Our time, especially here in Bali, has been filled with diving, snorkeling, surfing, incredible food, wonderful people, exotic ceremonies, white-knuckled driving, but not a lot of time to sit and reflect about all of these experiences. Thus, we decided to head for the hills, find a quiet bungalow, and spend a few days sipping coffee and tea and taking walks through the region in order to slow things down and spend some time reflecting, as well as looking forward.

Diving the East Coast of Bali

Fresh from our visa renewal in Singapore, we’ve spent the past week on the east coast of Bali in Candidasa earning our Advanced Open Water Diver certification. In this episode we learn that Julie can write her name backwards quicker when at 28 meters in the ocean than on the surface.

A Farewell to Friends, Plus Why Your Ice Cream Is So Thick and Creamy

Today we said goodbye to a wonderful couple we met in Bali plus we paid a visit to Nusa Dua: beach-lounging capital of Bali as well as a place to find the secret ingredient to diet shakes and ice cream.

Uluwatu Surfing

The swell had picked up overnight. It was 6am, and I was standing on a run-down cement foundation that jutted out of the hillside, giving me the best view of waves below. We were back on the Bukit Peninsula, after a few days spent in Ubud, and I watched as an overhead set fired through the reef at Bingins.

A Walk Around Ubud

The kindness of the Balinese people continues to amaze me. Julie and I stood dripping on the side of the road, hiding in some shade offered by a tree from the mid-day sun. What had drawn us to this spot, besides the shade, was the music. Following the advice of Lonely Planet we had set out earlier in the morning for a walk outside of Ubud.

In Bali

We made it to Bali! The trip was admittedly exhausting, leaving Hawaii at 3am on Monday and not arriving in Bali until 2pm on Wednesday. But we are truly stoked to be here. I have dreamt of coming to Bali since I was 12 years old, staring at the perfect waves pictured each month in my surf magazines. But once you get here you realize there is so much more, the magic of the island surrounds you from all sides.
